Kalimas Port
The traditional Kalimas port now is use as the place to take apart / contain things of ocean ships by the barges and the boat.
Surabaya is a city that for hundred years ago colonized by Dutch then the shape of the building influenced by the European style. Dutch it self had many canal. Because they had the channel, of course there built the bridge everywhere. From the ordinary bridge, the suspension bridge to ophaalburg or the drawbridge. Surabaya was also almost the same although canals in Surabaya not as much as in Dutch. The time previously, freighters big measuring only obtain in Madura Strait but rather approach to Surabaya waters. Then, to take apart or contain his cargo things was used barges or schooner ships.
After the small ships contained the things in the middle of sea, agilely the ships investigated Kalimas until the main port that was the Surabaya City port at that time. And the location was the heart of the city. With the name Heeresentraat (now there is around the Rajawali Street and Kembang Jepun) that was the centre of take apart business. Between the two streets, has had bridge that stretched on Kalimas. And that bridge was acknowledged as Roode Brug or Jembatan Merah.
That time Tanjung Perak Port was not yet available, whereas the seaport was in Kalimas Estuary. Along Kalimas divided into 2 parts, that are Westerkade Kalimas (Western part of Kalimas) and Osterkade Kalimas (one East part of Kalimas) or Surabaya resident called kulon kali area and wetan kali. The wetan kali area was the area of trade, from Kembang Jepun, Cantikan, Kapasan, to Northern side of the K. H. Mansyur street (Pegirian, Nyamplungan, et cetera). That includes to kulon kali area are Gresik street , Kalisosok and around the Tanjung Perak Barat. Along the Kalimas River in 1925, there was many factories established that were the industry sector in Surabaya . The essence of cultural preservation actually is not an icon of a city. More than that is the high valuable artifact.
If being investigated Surabaya was surrounded by the river that connected the small river and big river. Now is realized as the tourism that must be conserved and developed, to recall the Kalimas river as the place for trade and the water port, the anchored place for small boats all along the Kalimas river also participation of sultan's family to keep along Kalimas river clean that supported by the Government of Surabaya by holding various activities among them the boat decorated.
